Dr Tendai Sawunyama
Tendai is a Water Resources Engineering specialist, with experience in catchment, and transboundary river basin management. He has worked in consultancy, academic and in the government sector. He has participated in multi country studies as a lead hydrology expert and study leader in studies funded by DFIs, IFIs and RBOs in Southern Africa. As a hydrologist Tendai, has been supporting the Technical Joint Water Commissions of the Republics of South Africa, Mozambique and Kingdom of Eswatini to reach amicable decisions on water resources planning and management, and large infrastructure development in the Incomati Basin. Tendai’s experience also includes groundwater and geotechnical investigations; technical support and maintenance of modelling requirements of river systems, validation and verification of water users, determination of water resource classes and associated resource quality objectives; development of the Water Master Plans, development of water operating rules, transboundary water governance, climate change in relation to various aspects to mention but a few. He participated in the Presidential advisory steering committee on Sustainable Infrastructure Development Symposium (SIDS) on behalf of Inkomati-Usuthu Catchment Management Agency. His role was to provide technical advice on the construction of regional dam within Mpumalanga Province. He provides technical advisory services to the Department of Water and Sanitation Chief Directorate International Water Cooperation. He is also a member of the Reference Groups of the Water Research Commission (WRC) and the Advisory Panel on Weather and Climate Change. The Advisory Panel on Weather and Climate was established by the Water Research Commission (WRC) to provide the water sector with regular updates on weather and climate matters affecting water provision in the country while providing outlook and advisory. His academic activities include being an external examiner for the University of KwaZulu Natal and University of the Witwatersrand. He is registered Professional Natural Scientist with South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions and is a member of International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) as well as South African National Committee of International Association of Hydrological Sciences (SANCIAHS).
